Just like the infrastructure it operates, The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is comprised of a symbiotic infrastructure – divisions and departments coming together to make a unified operation. The Port Authority itself conceives, builds, operates and maintains infrastructure critical to New York and New Jersey. It operates all the region’s major airports, marine terminals and ports, the PATH rail transit system, six tunnels and bridges between New York and New Jersey, the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Manhattan and the World Trade Center. To efficiently manage external operations, the Port Authority’s internal operations must be aligned with the agency’s overall mission.

Most companies need months or even years to truly find their footing after startup. Developing a product, establishing a staff and finding a customer base immediately following its founding was not a problem for AbbVie.

The North Chicago, Ill.-based pharmaceutical R&D company already had decades of experience and a portfolio of well-known prescription drug brands including Humira, Tricor and Vicodin when it formally split off in January from healthcare research giant Abbott Laboratories. “We're probably the best startup company you've ever seen because we have the heritage and financial wherewithal from our former company, but we've become our own company with our own speed, logistics and execution,” Director of Global Logistics Russell Garich says. “We're a new company, but already have the largest-selling pharmaceutical products in the world. It's a pretty good way to start.”

As founder and president of her own company, Time Logistics Inc. (TLI), Laura Shorette understands how crucial it is for business owners to meet shipping deadlines, so she has made it the cornerstone of her freight management company to satisfy her clients’ needs for punctuality, every time, all the time. “We do more than A to B,” Shorette explains. “We do everything in between to satisfy our clients because we understand that we are dealing with their livelihood.”

Trailways Inc. got its start in 1936 when five independent bus companies came together to become more competitive in the U.S. motorcoach market. Since then, the company has built a strong brand of 88 independently owned carriers that work together to operate more than 2,500 luxury-styled motorcoaches and serve more than 1,000 destinations in the United States, as well as in Germany and the Netherlands. President and CEO Gale Ellsworth explains the company’s well-known brandname is the result of top-quality customer service and vehicles, as well as a dedication to superior safety.

For Mode Transportation, variety truly is the spice of life – and the key to its growth. “A lot of freight companies might be typecast into just one type of service or customer base,” says Todd Thompson, senior vice president of the Dallas-based company. “We don’t serve just one market vertical. We have a wide variety of customers for whom we provide more than one transportation service.”
