Discover how Farsley Transport is leading the way to a greener future in the UK’s haulage industry
Based in Leeds, UK, Farsley Transport Ltd (Farsley) is a leading transport company that offers local and nationwide deliveries with a fleet of over 60 vehicles, ranging from articulated vehicles and curtain side vans to Moffett vehicles, hiabs, and flatbeds. With membership in both the United Pallet Network (UPN) and Palletforce pallet network, Farsley Transport is well-positioned to provide reliable and efficient delivery services to its clients all over the UK.
The company’s story began in September 1994 when it was established as Farsley Transport Services by current Owner and Founder, Neil Chappelow. Starting out as a one-man operation with just a van and working from his garage, Neil still managed to reliably deliver his services across the length and breadth of the UK. His hands-on and personal approach proved to be very successful among clients, which soon led to the rapid growth of the company. In 1997, Farsley officially became a limited company, changing from Farsley Transport Services to Farsley Transport Ltd. From this moment on, the company never stopped growing, expanding year on year thanks to Neil’s continuous investments in the company, getting it to where it is today.
Farsley’s growth was accompanied by a steady expansion of its fleet, with new additions taking place over the years. In 1998, the company added its first articulated vehicle, followed by the introduction of its renowned pallet distribution services in 2003, when Farsley also became a founding member of the UPN. The acquisition of its first Moffett mounted vehicle in 2008 further enhanced the company’s capabilities. Nowadays, Farsley’s fleet ranges from articulated vehicles to 3.5 ton curtain side vans, with everything in between. Additionally, the fleet is fully fitted with state-of-the-art tracking equipment and industry leading technology compliant with Direct Vision Standard (DVS), allowing Farsley’s drivers to deliver into London.
Reliable and efficient services
This extensive and diverse fleet is particularly useful in carrying out Farsley’s pallet distribution services. As a proud partner of UPN and Palletforce, two well-established pallet networks, the company can offer clients a range of delivery options, including next-day, economy, and timed pallet delivery services. Farsley’s networks are made up of various freight and logistics companies across the UK and Europe, all working together to ensure the specific delivery needs of each customer are met. Each company in the network is designated its own local area and postcodes to service. For example, if a client is looking to ship a pallet from Leeds to Inverness, Farsley will collect said pallet, transport it to the main hub, and then one of the network members will deliver the customer’s item to the final destination. Through this collaborative approach, Farsley is empowered to provide reliable and efficient delivery services to its clients, no matter where they are located.
Equally crucial to the execution of its pallet distribution services are Farsley’s large warehousing facilities. With two dedicated warehousing facilities based at its depot on Geldard Lane in Leeds, the company boasts more than 45,000 square feet of warehousing space on-site. As a result, businesses are provided with an outlet to store goods on both a short- and long-term basis. Understanding that the efficient storage and management of goods is crucial for any business, Farsley is not only able to store its customers’ goods, but also to manage stock and distribute from its fully secured premises.
Furthermore, its fleet of forklifts is capable of lifting up to 2.5 tons and is complemented with a dedicated internal forklift for navigating its racking system. In addition to its pallet racking system and hard-standing storage offerings, Farsley’s on-site container ramp allows it to provide devanning services, along with the ability to re-stack, palletize goods, shrink wrap accordingly, and re-deliver in curtain side vehicles. Such a wide range of services makes Farsley stand out as a one-stop shop for all logistics needs, ensuring efficient and seamless operations for its customers.
Going green
When it comes to environmental responsibility, Farsley is dedicated to making its operations more sustainable and reducing its carbon emissions. According to UPN, the company has made a significant contribution to the UPN Sustainability Commitment by becoming the first haulage company in Yorkshire to embrace electric vehicles (EV) with the incorporation of an articulated Volvo Electric FM into its fleet. In an interview with UPN on the topic, Neil Chappelow commented: “The primary reason we have introduced this vehicle is to show that we are dedicated to going green and are actively looking for ways to reduce our carbon footprint, such as having an electric truck on the road. However, it is not only about us contributing to counter climate change, but also encouraging others to do the same and building awareness. It is not an easy task in our industry, but we are taking positive steps that will lower our emissions. If it can work for us then it can work for other haulers as well.
“Our new Volvo Electric FM seals our commitment to supporting a more sustainable and greener future for our industry. We are very proud to be leading the way by reducing our carbon footprint, and this is just the first milestone in our sustainability journey,” he added.
Thanks to a network of partnerships across the UK and Europe as well as continuous investments, Farsley is poised for sustained growth while making progress in reducing its environmental impact.
