From electric ferries to hybrid workboats, discover how Tersan Havyard oversees every project phase

“Founded in 1918, our shipyard has a long 108-year-old history of delivering a diverse range of vessels, including ferries, live fish carriers, large offshore vessels, and fishing boats. We have never been afraid of taking on prototype projects, so we pride ourselves on being a forward-thinking shipyard that embraces innovation and taking on new types of project with cutting-edge technology. Due to our previous ownership with Norwegian Electric Systems, we have actively participated in technology development for the maritime industry. As of now, we are Norway’s leading shipyard, delivering the highest number of fully electric ferries and hybrid vessels. Two years ago, we were acquired by a Turkish shipyard named Tersan Shipyard. As a result, we not only have our shipyard in Norway, but we also have a mother company in Turkey with one of the largest shipyards in the country. This partnership allows us to maintain unique control over our projects and the entire value chain, from steel cutting to delivery, commissioning, and testing in Norway. Furthermore, our partnership gives us the fantastic ability to reach customers, no matter where they are located,” she begins.
Enhancing capabilities
Tersan Havyard operates in two core areas: providing new builds and offering maintenance and conversion services. In addition, the company can deploy its skilled team to perform servicing on board of vessels, although this represents a relatively small segment of the business. Such services are usually provided for customers who are already familiar with its employees and specifically request them to address issues on board.
At the end of 2023, Tersan Shipyard acquired Havyard Leirvik, a Norwegian facility that has since been renamed Tersan Havyard. As Silje notes, this acquisition has tremendously enhanced Tersan Havyard’s capabilities across almost every aspect of operations. “It expands our ability to take on projects and greatly enhances our competitiveness. Several factors contribute to our competitive edge: we have control over the value chain, and hull construction is performed in-house rather than through third-parties. Both shipyards excel in their respective specialties, and by combining our strengths, Tersan Havyard gains incredible flexibility in project management. In practical terms, we can adapt our production during the project phase based on which yard has available capacity that fits the specific project needs. By uniting our capabilities between the Turkish and Norwegian shipyards, we offer exceptional flexibility and ensure high-quality project execution for our customers,” she adds.
Unique project portfolio
Soon after its acquisition by Tersan Shipyard at the tail end of 2023, Tersan Havyard secured a newbuild contract to construct a hybrid workboat for Nordlaks, a Norwegian aquaculture company. “This project marks the first newbuilding initiative signed after we came under our Turkish ownership. The vessel is unique in many ways, but it holds quite a special significance for us because we constructed the whole vessel at our own yard while also developing the entire value chain within our Norwegian facility, a model that we do not employ very often. Despite its relatively small size, the vessel boasts enormous capacities, serving as an offshore workboat with a tumblehome. This is an exciting project that we have now delivered, which makes us very proud. I believe that as a service vessel for the aquaculture industry, it stands out in many ways due to its unique features: it offers substantial towing and crane capacity and is equipped with advanced technology, including silent thrust systems. There are a lot more things to be said about this exceptional vessel,” Silje expands.
Innovation and collaboration
Another remarkable ongoing project awarded to Tersan Havyard is the hybrid battery ferries contract with Norled, one of Norway’s largest ferry and express boat companies. Silje shares insights into how the project is progressing as well as its significance for Tersan Havyard. “We recently received the first hull for this project, and it was delivered before schedule. This means that we are exactly where we should be in the schedule, which is a very promising start. For this project, we are working alongside the system integrator, Norwegian Electric Systems (NES), with whom we foster excellent collaboration. NES plays an important role when it comes to working on this type of vessel, as it is responsible for delivering most of the equipment needed to complete the project. As the designated system integrator, NES has a plethora of responsibilities for this vessel.
“This project with Norled marks the first contract we have secured where we are working in partnership with Tersan Shipyard in Turkey. It is our first hands-on collaboration. As part of this endeavor, Tersan Shipyard is focused on delivering the hull, while we will be handling the final outfitting in Norway. This is the first time we are adopting this model in conjunction with Tersam, and we are using this project phase to get to know each other better and establish a strong working relationship,” she ends.
