Public transport powerhouse, Go-Ahead Group, is driving the future of sustainable transport

With a global network encompassing seven rail lines and more than 7000 buses, Go-Ahead Group has redefined what it means to be a true leader in the public transportation industry. Initially founded as a small bus operator in North East England, Go-Ahead Group’s growth journey has been impressive. Over the last 30 years, the company has garnered over 27,000 employees across the world, all providing the best services that public transportation has to offer. What continues to set Go-Ahead Group apart, however, is its commitment to innovation in delivering sustainable, accessible transport services that meet the evolving needs of modern, increasingly interconnected communities.

Transportation & Logistics International has been following Go-Ahead Group’s journey for several years now, documenting its strategic growth and innovation. We sit down with Daniel Lewis, Chief Commercial Officer at Go-Ahead Group, to learn more about the investments and developments that the company hasan Elizabeth line Class 345 train at a station platform introduced over the last 12 months.

“It’s been an exciting year for us. We’ve just agreed a £500 million investment in new electric buses for our UK bus operators, which will see just over 1000 electric buses come into service over the next few years. This development marks a huge step forward in our ambition to become a net-zero company by 2045 and showcases that we’re really at the forefront of that transition,” Daniel reveals.

“We’ve also made several investments into our people. Firstly, we’ve launched two brand new state-of-the-art engineering apprenticeship academies – one in London and one in Greater Manchester – which is an exciting step in retraining our engineers for the transition from diesel to electric and directly links to our investment in our EV fleet. On top of that, we’ve also launched our Go-Ahead Women Campaign, which was accompanied by significant investments to make our depot facilities more gender inclusive.”

Expanding operations

Indeed, 2025 has been another highly successful year for Go-Ahead Group thus far. Building upon investments of previous years, the company has continued to develop its infrastructure and its network, particularly in terms of sustainability and its journey to Net Zero. By the end of 2025, the Group pledges to launch more than 200 electric buses into its regional bus fleet in response to the UK Government’s ZEBRA 2 funding initiative and has already electrified over 150 buses within its Oxford fleet at Oxford Bus Company.

Aside from electrification, Go-Ahead Group has also made a series of strategic acquisitions to further strengthen its geographical footprint and scope of capabilities. “We’ve made seven acquisitions in the UK and one in Sweden; we’ve also commenced our operation of the Elizabeth Line of behalf of TfL, which is a very exciting contract for us. It means that, together with our existing rail coverage, we now carry almost 40 percent of all UK rail passengers, which is a massive achievement for us and something of which we’re very proud,” Daniel explains. “The coach companies that we’ve acquired have helped us to enter a new part of the market that we haven’t, historically, been a big player in. It has helped us to diversify our revenue and our portfolio of operations whilst offering the highest quality scope of services for our customers. We now have the largest zero-emission bus fleet in the UK with almost 1500 electric and hydrogen powered buses across more than 20 electrified depots.”

As Go-Ahead Group continues to expand its market presence through fleet investments and strategic acquisitions, it has implemented several new data management technologies to harmonize the connectivity of its operations and drive greater efficiency for its customers. “We’ve been upgrading a lot of our processes and systems to give us access to more data to allow us to make better, more informed decisions. We’ve implemented a new asset management system called Hexagon that supplies us with more in-depth data to do better predictive maintenance, which means that we can anticipate problems before they occur and keep our buses on the road,” Daniel shares. “Additionally, we’ve just launched our new Operations Control Centre in London, where we’re bringing an innovative, data-driven approach to our controllers, which is particularly important as we continue to electrify our fleet. This technology will allow us to provide more reliable, punctual, and more comfortable bus services to our communities.”

Connecting communities

Year on year, Go-Ahead Group continues to be recognized as one of Britain’s Most Admired Companies – a list that celebrates excellence in terms of corporate performance, sustainability, and community impact. The recognition serves as testament to the company’s customer-centric ethos and drive for continuous improvement as it proceeds to provide positive and efficient services for its communities.

“We’re proud of that award; it takes a lot to be an ‘admired’ company. It all goes back our philosophy, our mission, and our values, and recognizing the essential role that we play in keeping our communities connected,” Daniel highlights. “We place great emphasis on making sure that our transport networks are comprehensive and accessible; we’ve also got a strong focus on our workforce and making sure that our customer-facing staff are qualified, well-trained, and friendly.

“Further to that, we place a big focus on social value and contributing to our communities beyond the services we provide. We’ve launched several customer-focused programs, such as our Helping Hand program, which is all about making transport more accessible for people with disabilities. We’ve currently launched the program in Brighton and across our Singapore operations, and we’re hoping to roll it out across our other UK operations too. I think that extra level of community engagement really makes us stand out.”

Creating social value

Following another great year, Go-Ahead Group’s position in the market remains strong as it continues to embark further on its strategic growth trajectory. Keeping its expansive customer base close to its core, the company will continue to invest back into its operations to keep communities connected, from the UK to the Nordics, Singapore, Australia, and beyond.

“We’re planning to invest close to £200 million into new electric buses across the country in 2026, which is an exciting step forward. If we’re successful in our tenders, we will have a busy year of mobilizing new operations, which will present great opportunities for us to expand our services and deliver more value to more communities,” Daniel affirms.

“Over the next five years, we will continue to be a market leader in electrification and are hoping to have most of our bus fleet electrified by 2035, which is no small feat when we operate 7000 buses globally. We want to continue to grow our presence across the UK and in our international markets; we want to expand our rail operations further, particularly in Australia and New Zealand,” he concludes, optimistic for the future ahead. “Being a multimodal operator is a big part of our strategy. With our unique approach to collaboration, partnership, and creating social value, we continue to offer public transport authorities a one-stop shop for accessible bus and rail transport.”
