Spartan Carrier Group merges operational excellence with a higher calling

In an industry where precision, efficiency, and reliability are the benchmarks of success, Spartan Carrier Group is proving that purpose-driven leadership can be a powerful competitive edge. Founded in 2021, the Fort Worth, Texas-based carrier has quickly made its mark in the just-in-time freight sector, particularly within the automotive supply chain. But what truly sets Spartan apart is its foundation: a steadfast commitment to Christian values that shapes every aspect of the business.

“We are a Christ-centered organization,” says Bobby Greene, Chief Commercial Officer at Spartan. “Our faith in Jesus Christ isn’t a backdrop, it’s central to who we are and how we operate. It guides our strategy, our relationships, and the way we serve our customers.”

Delivering critical freight with care

Spartan specializes in the seamless transport of time-sensitive freight, particularly for automotive manufacturers who rely on precise, just-in-time deliveries. Its trailers regularly move essential parts from suppliers across North America, directly to production lines, where they are immediately integrated into the assembly process. The company’s portfolio also includes retail and food-grade goods, from athletic footwear to refrigerated dairy shipments.

But logistics acumen is only part of the story. Behind the company’s operational success is a workplace culture rooted in purpose. “We begin each day with prayer and reflection, seeking guidance on how to lead and serve,” Bobby explains. “It doesn’t make us perfect, but it grounds us in a mission that goes beyond profits.”

Culture as a competitive advantage

Spartan’s people-first culture has proven to be more than a moral compass – it’s a strategic differentiator. In an industry where driver turnover percentages remain in triple digits annually, Spartan boasts the lowest rates in the industry.

“We invest in our drivers, not just with pay and new equipment, but with respect and real human connection,” Bobby says. “We regularly call our drivers just to check in and ask how they’re doing. That level of care is rare in this space, and it makes a difference.”

The company has also engineered a creative logistics model that allows many of its long-haul drivers to return home daily. By breaking routes into ten-hour segments and facilitating truck exchanges, Spartan ensures drivers can meet both operational demands and personal priorities – a powerful retention tool and morale booster.

From vision to velocity

Spartan’s rapid growth is the product of clear vision and bold leadership. Founder Carlos M. Llanes Jr., a US military veteran and seasoned logistics executive, launched the company after resigning from a corporate role during the Covid-19 pandemic. At the time, his former employer chose to shutter operations and furlough its workforce.

“Carlos believed there was a more purposeful path, one grounded in service and resilience,” Bobby shares. “He suggested shifting the company’s focus to hauling essential goods during the pandemic. Although the proposal wasn’t embraced at the time, Carlos remained committed to his convictions. On July 4th, in a moment that spoke to his deep sense of patriotism and purpose, he chose to part ways and launch Spartan.”

That decision would mark the beginning of a remarkable journey. Carlos brings a rare combination of strategic foresight, marketing savvy, and steadfast faith to hisSpartan Carrier Group truck leadership. His thoughtful approach, even drawing wisdom from his study of the Bible, has influenced how Spartan is structured and led. These principles have helped the company quickly earn respect within the logistics sector.

“From our logo to our digital footprint, every detail reflects our identity,” Bobby adds. “We’re a high-performance, faith-driven carrier committed to caring for both our people and our customers.”

Navigating change with conviction

With shifting political dynamics and evolving trade policies on the horizon, Spartan is preparing to adapt. “There’s uncertainty this year, particularly for international carriers like us,” Greene notes. “Some customers are exploring reshoring production to avoid tariffs, which could lead to increased domestic miles. We’re ready to pivot as needed.”

Still, the focus remains steady. Spartan plans to increase its revenue within the next five years through continued organic growth, all while maintaining the values that have driven its early success.

“We’re staying humble, disciplined, and grateful,” Bobby concludes. “Everything we’ve built has been a blessing, and we’re committed to stewarding it with integrity.”

In a sector defined by relentless movement and mounting pressure, Spartan Carrier Group offers a refreshing example of how principled leadership and operational excellence can go hand in hand. For this carrier, faith isn’t just part of the journey, it’s driving the entire mission forward.
