Walmart is expanding its drone delivery footprint, marking a significant milestone in its broader strategy to reshape last-mile logistics. With more than 150,000 drone deliveries already completed since 2021, the retail giant has moved from experimentation to execution, announcing a rollout in five key metro areas: Atlanta, Charlotte, Houston, Orlando, and Tampa.

This initiative positions Walmart as the first major US retailer to deploy drone delivery services across multiple states. The company’s goal is to deliver lightweight items to customers’ homes within 30 minutes, supported by a strategic partnership with Wing, a subsidiary of Alphabet. The expansion brings drone delivery capability to 100 new Walmart locations and signals a maturing of autonomous aerial logistics.

Walmart’s drone fleet spreads across five cities and states

The scale and speed of Walmart’s expansion highlight its logistical ambition. These five cities span across Georgia, North Carolina, Texas, Florida, and Arkansas. These states combine high population density with a tech-savvy consumer base. Walmart’s drones will operate within a six-mile radius of each store, complying with the FAA’s Beyond Visual Line of Sight regulations, which allow drone pilots to operate without direct visual contact.

By targeting these metropolitan zones, Walmart is testing the operational limits of real-time, drone-based retail delivery in dynamic urban environments. The rollout reflects both an aggressive growth strategy and confidence in drone infrastructure to manage increasing volume.

Delivery in under 30 minutes

Walmart’s drone delivery service focuses on smaller, everyday essentials such as baby formula, eggs, over-the-counter medication, and snacks. These items each weigh up to five pounds. While lightweight, they are often urgently needed, making them ideal for fast, aerial delivery.

For Walmart+ members, drone delivery is offered at no additional cost. Non-members can access the service for a $19.99 fee. Orders are typically fulfilled in under 30 minutes, with many arriving in under 19 minutes. Customers can track the drone’s flight using an app, then receive their package as it is gently lowered by a tether into their driveway or backyard.

Walmart’s competitive edge in last-mile logistics

This move is not simply about speed. It is about scalability. Walmart is leveraging drone delivery as an advantage in a fast-changing e-commerce environment. The service complements its broader logistics offerings, including Express Delivery, InHome, and late-night services, forming a multi-channel ecosystem that meets a variety of consumer needs.

While other retailers are experimenting with similar technologies, Walmart is implementing them at volume. This positions the company as a logistics and technology leader, redefining expectations around delivery timeframes and service reach.

Inside the Wing partnership

Wing’s drones are designed for commercial delivery with a five-foot wingspan, speeds up to 65 mph, and a lightweight frame built to carry packages up to five pounds. They are engineered for safe navigation in complex airspace.

Drones are launched from designated Walmart stores, which serve as both retail hubs and drone ports. Customers can choose specific delivery zones such as their driveway or backyard, offering a tailored experience that increases both safety and convenience.

With FAA approval to operate Beyond Visual Line of Sight, Walmart and Wing can now deploy drones in a way that moves beyond pilot programs and into true operational scale.
